| Religious leader, born in Udine, Italy. Emigrating to the USA as a child, he was ordained (1919) and was a pastor in Iowa for many years (1920–41). As executive director of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference (1939–60), he promoted greater awareness of Third World needs, and he also served as Vatican ambassador to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (1948–71). |
