| Italian statesman and prime minister (1988–9), born in Nusco, SW Italy. He joined the Christian Democratic Party, and in 1963 was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. He became a deputy (1963), then minister of industry (1973–4), foreign affairs (1974–5). He was also party leader from 1982 to 1989. |
