| biography:
| Writer and critic, born in Mineo, Sicily, S Italy. He was contributor and then editor of the literary supplement Il Fanfulla della Domenica. The leading theorist of the verismo movement, he saw the novel as a ‘human document’ combining a naturalist view of reality with the psychological analysis of the characters, without the interference of the writer's thoughts. He wrote short stories (Le paesane, 1894), novels (Profumo, 1890; Il marchese di Roccaverdina, 1901), and essays (Gli 'ismi' contemporanei, 1898). |
