| Austrian soldier, born in Sopron, NW Hungary. He distinguished himself in Galicia (1846), Italy (1847), and Hungary (1849), and in 1859 drove back the Piedmontese at Solferino. In 1866 he commanded the northern Austrian army in the war with Prussia; but after the defeat of Sadowa in 1866 he was superseded. |
