| Writer, born in Oberammergau, S Germany. The son of a forester, he first took up forestry, then studied law and practised until 1899, when he began to write for the periodical Simplicissimus. A well-loved author, he became best known for novels set in his native Bavaria, such as Lausbubengeschichten (1905), Moral (1909), Briefwechsel (1909), Erster Klasse (1910), and Josef Filsers Briefwechsel (1912) which are full of Bavarian chauvinist dry humour and satire. Notable among his comedies was Die Lokalbahn (1902) and he gained international renown with his Christmas story Heilige Nacht (1916). |
