| Writer, born in Dresden, E Germany. He gave up his army career to study law and economics and became a member of the German Communist Party in 1928. His autobiographical novel Krieg (1928), a realistic portrayal of a soldier's life on the front line, was followed by the sequel Nachkrieg (1930), and brought him international acclaim. He was imprisoned in 1932, later emigrating (1936) to fight in the Spanish Civil War. He returned to Dresden in 1947, where he was a professor of anthropology. He also wrote books of memoirs and novels for young people. |
