| King of Bavaria, born in Strasbourg, the son of Maximilian I Joseph. He came to the Bavarian throne in 1825, established Munich as a centre for the arts and science, and supported a liberal constitution for Bavaria in 1818 and the cause of Greek liberation. His son, Otto, was crowned King of Greece in 1832. He became unpopular due to his liaison with Lola Montez and abdicated after the revolution of March 1848, in favour of Maximilian II. |
