| King of Provence, King of Italy, and Holy Roman Emperor, born in Autun, EC France. He was the son of Boso, King of Provence, and Irmingard, the daughter of Lothar II. In 900 he was crowned King of Italy, in opposition to Berengario I, and the following year was anointed emperor by Pope Benedict IV. He was defeated by Berengario in 905, dethroned, and blinded, but remained emperor, if only in name, until Berengario's crowning in 915. |
