| biography:
| King of Bavaria (1864–86), born in Munich, the son and successor of Maximilian II. A German patriot of Romantic disposition, he devoted himself to patronage of Wagner and his music, and built Neuschwanstein castle in the Bavarian mountains. Siding with Prussia (1870–1) against France, he took Bavaria into the new German Second Reich. Later he adopted the life of a recluse, and in 1886 was declared insane; shortly after, he drowned himself in the Starnberger L, near his castle of Berg. |
