| German statesman, economist, and Christian Democratic chancellor (1963–6), born in Fürth, SEC Germany. Professor of economics at Munich, in 1949 he was elected to the Federal Parliament at Bonn, and made Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Adenauer administration. He was the pioneer of the West German ‘economic miracle’ of recovery from wartime devastation. He succeeded Adenauer as chancellor, but economic difficulties forced his resignation. |
