| Playwright and novelist, born in Vienna, Austria. He was a bookshop assistant, a touring actor, and a police clerk before the success of his play, Der Pfarrer von Kirchfeld (1870, The Pastor of Kirchfeld), enabled him to devote the rest of his life to writing. He was the author of several novels, of which the best is Der Sternsteinhof (1885, The Sternstein Farm), and about 20 plays, mostly about Austrian peasant life. |
