| biography:
| Philosopher, born in Landshut, SE Germany. He studied theology at Heidelberg and Berlin, then philosophy at Erlangen. He was a pupil of Hegel, but reacted against his idealism. Feuerbach's most famous work, Das Wesen des Christentums (1841, The Essence of Christianity), claims that religion rises from one's alienation from oneself, and the projection of ideal human qualities onto a fictitious supreme ‘other’. His naturalistic materialism was a strong influence on Marx and Engels. |
