| Prussian officer, born in Berlin, Germany. He distinguished himself in the Battle of Auerstedt (1806). During the War of Liberation against Napoleon I he founded a volunteer corps named the Lützowsche Freikorps which was practically wiped out in the Völkerschlacht von Leipzig (1813). The ‘Schwarze Schar’ was the origin of the Deutsche Burschenschaften. Their colours (black uniform with red lapels and yellow buttons) were the model for the German tricolor. |
