| biography:
| Roman emperor (193–211), the founder of the Severan dynasty (193–235), and the first Roman emperor to be born in Africa (at Leptis Magna, of Romanized Punic stock). Declared emperor by the army in 193, he spent the early years of his reign securing his position against his rivals. Once established, he proved to be an able administrator, effecting many reforms, and showing a particularly close interest in the army and the law. His final years were spent in Britain, trying unsuccessfully to restore order in the N of the province. |
