| biography:
| Journalist and writer, born in Wakefield, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at Harvard University (1927), and then worked as a journalist, notably for the New York Herald Tribune (1929–50), chronicling Manhattan's high society in rococo prose in the syndicated column ‘This New York’. Also an authority on railroads and the West, his books include High Iron (1938), Legends of the Comstock Lode (1950), San Francisco's Golden Era (1960), and The Overland Limited (1963). He moved to San Francisco and began the column ‘This Wild West’ for the Chronicle in 1960. |
