| biography:
| Poet and visual artist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He is generally regarded as the most original and experimental poet of Dutch post-war poetry. At the first exhibition of his visual work in Amsterdam (1948), he was introduced by Kouwenaar to the Movement of Fifty (Vijftigers), and shortly after Lucebert made his debut as a poet in the Reflex literary magazine. A member of the Movement of Fifty, he also became associated with the Cobra movement with regard to his visual art. At an award meeting to receive the poetry prize of Amsterdam, he nominated himself the ‘Emperor of the Movement of Fifty’, a title which stayed with him during his lifetime. His poetry is dominated by a strong sense of rhythm and is at its best when read aloud. As a visual artist, he succeeded in translating the literary ideas of the Movement of Fifty into his art, which is characterized by his use of bright colours. In 1965 he was awarded the Constantijn Huygensprijs and in 1967 received the P C Hooft-prijs. |
