| biography:
| Dutch noblewoman, born in Châtillon-sur-Loing, C France, the daughter of Gaspard de Coligny, the French Huguenot leader killed in the Massacre of St Bartholomew, and widow of Charles de Téligny, who was also massacred. In April 1583 she became the fourth wife of William I (the Silent) of Orange, who was killed 15 months later, and her son was Stadtholder Frederick Henry of Orange. She tried to conciliate during the Twelve-Years Truce. Her alleged permissive views made her unpopular with preachers and the population. She made frequent visits to the French court during her widowhood, and was the centre of a Francophile party in The Hague, which made her suspect with the orthodox Calvinists. She also sided with the Remonstrants. |
