| Home economist, born in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. A Yale biochemistry PhD, she taught home economics at the University of Missouri (1907–23). As chief of the new Bureau of Home Economics at the US Department of Agriculture (1923–43), she directed the massive Consumer Purchases Study (1938–41) and promoted standardized clothing sizes. |
