| biography:
| Dutch historian, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He studied history at Amsterdam University, and became editor of De Groene Amsterdammer in 1938–40. During World War 2 he worked in London for Radio Oranje, and in 1945 was appointed director of the National Institute for War Documentation (RIOD). He was commissioned to write a comprehensive history of The Netherlands in the War and presented a popular TV series on the period of the German occupation. He was special professor of modern history at Rotterdam in 1969–80. |
