| biography:
| Linguist, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He founded the Linguistic Circle of Copenhagen in 1931, and was a co-founder of the journal Acta Linguistica in 1939. With associates in Copenhagen, he devised a system of linguistic analysis known as glossematics, based on the study of the distribution of, and the relationships between, the smallest meaningful units of a language (glossemes). This is outlined in his Prolegomena to a Theory of Language (1943). |
