| Canadian statesman and prime minister (1948–57), born in Compton, Quebec, SE Canada. He trained as a lawyer in Quebec, and entered the Dominion parliament in 1941 as a Liberal. He was minister of justice and attorney general (1941–6) and minister of external affairs (1946–8). In 1948 he became leader of the Liberal Party and prime minister, but resigned as leader after his Party's defeat in the 1957 election. |
