| biography:
| Librarian and educator, born in Lenoir, North Carolina, USA. He studied at the University of North Carolina (1905 PhD) and stayed on to plan the library school and develop the university's extensive Carolina history collection. He also served as dean of the extension programme and editor of the university press. He spent 10 years (1932–42) as the first dean of the University of Chicago Graduate Library School before returning to the University of North Carolina until his retirement in 1959. |
