| biography:
| King of the Netherlands, born in Ajaccio, Corsica, the brother of the French Emperor Napoleon. In 1802 he married Napoleon's stepdaughter, Hortense de Beauharnais, and was the father of the later Napoleon III. He accompanied Napoleon on his Italian and Egyptian campaigns and was made King of the Netherlands in 1806, but was removed in 1810 because of his half-hearted promotion of French interests and Napoleon's continental system. After leaving the Netherlands he joined the Austrians under the title of Comte de Saint-Leu, in the hope of recovering his throne. He ended his days in exile in Florence. |
