| biography:
| Architect, born in Paris, France. He produced outstanding Baroque designs for the aristocracy, and the Hôtel Lambert, Paris, stands out particularly for the ingenious use of site. His design of Vaux-le-Vicomte (1657–61), with formal landscape by André Le Nôtre, constituted an influential milestone in French architecture, leading to his Baroque masterpiece of Versailles (from 1661, again with Le Nôtre), designed on a palatial scale for court and government. Other works include various town-houses in Paris, and the Collège des Quatre-Nations (1663, now the Palais de l'Institut since 1806). |
