| French-Canadian leader, born in Montreal, Quebec, SE Canada. He was Speaker of the House of Assembly for Lower Canada (1815–37), opposed the union with Upper Canada, and agitated against the imperial government. His leadership of the Patriotes during the rebellion of 1837 led to a warrant being issued against him for high treason. He escaped to Paris, but returned to Canada after the general amnesty of 1844. |
