| Health statistician, born in Kovno, Lithuania. His family emigrated to New York (1886), where he turned his enthusiasm for biology and mathematics into a career as an actuary at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (1909–51). He influenced the keeping of accurate birth and death statistics across the country and wrote prolifically, including a once-popular book on suicides, To Be or Not To Be (1933). |
