| biography:
| Folklorist, born in Albany, New York, USA. He was a literature professor before becoming founding director of the Cooperstown (NY) Farmers' Museum (1946–72), which he developed into a leading museum of rural life. There he originated the Seminars on American Culture (1948). A specialist in New York state folklore, 18th-c social history, and American folk art, he directed the State University of New York's Cooperstown graduate programmes (1964–82). |
