name: Louis (Charles) XVII

sex: male
lived: (1785–95)

biography: Titular King of France (1793–5), born in Versailles, NC France, the second son of Louis XVI and heir to the throne from June 1789. After the execution of his father (Jan 1793) he remained in the Temple prison in Paris. His death there dealt a blow to the hopes of Royalists and constitutional monarchists. The secrecy surrounding his last months led to rumours of his escape, and produced several claimants to his title.
