| Biologist, eco-philosopher, and radical theologian, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at the universities of Melbourne and Adelaide, then taught at Sydney, where he became professor of biology (1960–84, then emeritus). A member of the Club of Rome since 1974, in 1990 he won the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. His books include Genetics and the Quality of Life (1975), The Liberation of Life (1981), On Purpose (1990), and Regaining Compassion (1993). Much of his work shows his concern for the philosophical and theological implications of science. |
