| King of Holland (1806–10), born in Ajaccio, Corsica, the third surviving brother of Napoleon I. He was a soldier, who married Napoleon's step-daughter, Hortense Beauharnais, in 1802. He ruled Holland as King Lodewijk I, but abdicated because Napoleon complained that he was too attached to the interests of the Dutch. He became Count of Saint-Leu, and settled in Austria and Switzerland, later living in Florence. He was the father of Napoleon III. |
