| biography:
| Writer, born in Paris, France. He was invalided out of the army early in World War 1, travelled widely during the war years, then practised medicine. His reputation is based on the two autobiographical novels he wrote during the 1930s: Voyage au bout de la nuit (1932, Journey to the End of the Night) and Mort à crédit (1936, trans Death by Instalments). During World War 2 he collaborated with the Vichy government and, a declared anti-semite, fled to Germany and Denmark in 1944. He later returned to Paris. |
