| German politician, born in Nordhausen, C Germany. A musician and lawyer, he became chairman (1989) of the new East German Christlich-Demokratische Union (CDU), and minister for Church affairs under Modrow. He became prime minister (1990) in the Grand Coalition and was signatory of the Zwei-plus-Vier Vertrag, but resigned that year because of allegations of former espionage activities. |
