| Holy Roman Emperor and King of Italy (818–55), the son of Ludwig the Pious. In 824, during one of his trips to Italy, he promulgated the Constitutio romana (‘Roman constitution’) which sanctioned the superiority of the emperor over the pope. At the death of his father (840), he inherited the imperial crown, but was challenged by his brothers Ludwig II ‘the German’ and Charles the Bald. Although defeated by them, he was recognized as emperor and King of Italy. |
