| biography:
| Art historian, born in Brunn, Czechoslovakia. He became an American citizen and studied at Duke University (1940 BA) and Princeton (1948 MFA; 1952 PhD). He served in the Army with the Office of Strategic Services (1943–6), and in the Office of Chief of Prosecution, Nuremberg War Crimes Trials (1946–7). A specialist in 18th-c and 19th-c European paintings, he taught primarily at Stanford (1963) and wrote many scholarly books and articles. |
