| biography:
| Dutch diplomat. In 1672 he fitted out a ship with 50 sailors at his own expense and fought in the Battle of Sole Bay. That year he became secretary, then Pensionary of Amsterdam (1673) and member of the Provincial Excecutive (1679). As ambassador he mediated between the emperor and the sultan (1690). After the Treaty of Rijswijk in 1697 he was ambassador to France, but recalled when Louis XIV recognized the Pretender as king of England. |
