| biography:
| British architect, born in Florence, NC Italy. He studied at the Architectural Association, London, and was a founder member of Team 4 with Norman Foster. Like Foster, he was concerned with advanced technology in architecture, and pushed the limits of design through exhaustive research. Two important works have caused widespread praise and controversy: the Beaubourg or Pompidou Centre, Paris (1971–9), with Renzo Piano, a large open interior space clothed in highly coloured services; and Lloyds of London (1979–85), a masterful and dramatic exercise in steel and glass, which exemplifies his architectural optimism. Later projects include the Millennium Dome, London (2000). He was created a life peer in 1996. |
