| Cricketer, born in India. He studied at Oxford, and was captain of the Oxford XI in 1954 when he was already a Kent player. He played in 114 Tests for England (23 as captain), scoring 7624 runs (average 44·06), and made a record six tours of Australia. In his long first-class career (1951–75) he was captain of Kent (1957–71), and scored 107 centuries, of which 22 were in Test matches. He became chairman of the International Cricket Council (1989–93), was knighted in 1992, and in 1997 was made a life peer. His son, Chris Cowdrey (1957– ), also captained Kent and England. |
