| biography:
| Nobleman, the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots and father of James I of England, born at Temple Newsom, Yorkshire, N England, UK. He married Mary (his cousin) in 1565, and was made Earl of Ross and Duke of Albany. His debauchery and arrogance made him unpopular, and his part in the murder (1566) of the Queen's secretary, David Rizzio, caused his downfall. He became estranged from the Queen, and during an illness was killed at Edinburgh when Kirk O'Field, the house in which he was sleeping, was destroyed by gunpowder - the result of a plot probably organized by the Earl of Bothwell, perhaps with Mary's knowledge. |
