| Criminologist and educator, born in Belmont, Massachusetts, USA. A sociologist who focused on both adult and juvenile crime, he taught for many years at Harvard (from 1967). He was special assistant to the secretary for juvenile delinquency, Office of Health, Education and Welfare (1961–2), and was associate director of the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice (1966–7), and chairman of the advisory board of the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice (1978). He wrote many books and articles. |
