| Athlete, born in Dundee, E Scotland, UK. She studied in Dundee and at the University of Alabama. Her athletic achievements in the 10 000 m include gold medals at the Commonwealth Games (1986, 1990), gold at the World Championships (1991) - a few months after giving birth - and silver at the Olympics (1988). She also won the silver for the 3000 m at the Indoor World Championships (1989), and was winner of the New York Marathon (1991) and the London Marathon (1996). She was voted Sportswriters' Athlete of the Year (1988, 1991) and BBC Sports Personality of the Year (1991). |
