| biography:
| Roman soldier and governor of Gaul (13BC), the son of Livia Drusilla, stepson of the emperor Augustus, and younger brother of Emperor Tiberius. His campaign against the Rhaeti and other Alpine tribes (15 BC) was celebrated by Horace in his Odes. Until his death he was engaged chiefly in establishing Roman supremacy in Germany, and received the title Germanicus. He had a canal dug (an improvement of the Utrechtse Vecht) to support his advances into Germany, the first recorded hydrological engineering work in Dutch history. The celebrated Germanicus Caesar was his son. |
