| King of the Lombards. Although Arian, he married his predecessor's Catholic widow, Gundeberga. He succeeded in strengthening central power, keeping the dukes in check, and expanded his domain to include Liguria (643) and part of Veneto. His reputation rests on the Rotari edict (643), the first written collection of Lombard laws. Although based mainly on Lombard tradition, the edict also incorporated elements of Roman law, and was reviewed and implemented by later Lombard kings. |
