| King of the Lombards, under whose reign the Lombards' domination of Italy reached its peak. He kept in check attempts to shake off his rule by the dukes of Spoleto and Benevento, and took advantage of discord between the pope and the Byzantines to occupy the exarchate, the pentapolis, and the Roman duchy. He reached a compromise with Pope Gregory II, and gave him the castle of Sutri (728), the first nucleus of the Papal States. Helping Charles Martel against the Arabs, he concluded the Terni agreement (742) with Pope Zachary to guarantee a 20-year truce with the papacy. He revised Rotari's edict by writing a body of laws in 153 chapters (713–35). |
