| Pope, born in Rome, Latium, Italy. Elected pope in 715, he sent Boniface to evangelize Thuringia in 1719. He successfully fought iconoclasty and kept the Lombards at bay. The ‘donazione di Sutri’ (728, the donation of Sutri) which he received from Liutprand, is generally acknowledged as the first step in the establishment of the Papal States. He supported Charles Martel in gaining the throne, thus forming an alliance between the Carolingian kings and the church. Feast day 11 February. |
