After navy service, he made a highly acclaimed documentary, On the Bowery (1956), and then gained further acclaim for Come Back Africa (1959), filmed in South Africa with a concealed camera. He continued promoting avant-garde films through showings at the theatre he owned, the Bleecker Street Cinema in New York City. |
