| Prime minister of France (1997–2002), born in Meudon, France. He studied in Paris at the Institute of Political Studies and the National School of Administration, became first secretary for foreign affairs and also taught economics at the University of Paris. Elected to the National Assembly in 1981, he became first secretary of the Socialist Party (1981–8), then held posts in education (1988–92) and foreign affairs (1992–7), before being elected prime minister. He also stood as a presidential candidate in 1995 and 2002, after which he announced his retirement from politics. |
