| Classicist, born in New York City, New York, USA. He studied at New York University (1934), gained his PhD (1939), became an assistant professor there (1936), and spent the rest of his professional career at the university. A specialist in nautical matters in the ancient world, he wrote Excavations at Nessana (1950) and The Ancient Mariners (1959), as well as Daily Life in Ancient Rome (1975) and Daily Life in Ancient Egypt (1975). He was a member of the advisory boards of American Neptune and Archaeology. |
