| biography:
| Guyanese statesman and prime minister (1964–80), born in Kitty, Guyana. He studied law in London, and was co-founder of the Marxist–Leninist People's Progressive Party in 1949. In 1955 he broke away, and was co-founder in 1957 of the more moderate, Socialist People's National Congress. As prime minister he led his country to independence in 1966. In 1980 a new constitution was adopted, and he became executive president until his death in office. |
