| biography:
| Entomologist, born in Summit, New Jersey, USA. He was a Fulbright scholar at Oxford University (1957–8), then taught at Amherst College (1958–80) before becoming distinguished professor of zoology at the University of Florida (1980). A specialist in studies of migration and protective colouration of monarch butterflies, and a producer of ecological films, he made major contributions to research on ecology, evolution, animal behaviour, and ecological chemistry. |
