| Italian politician, born in Patù, Apulia, S Italy. A law lecturer at Naples University, he was dismissed for participating in the 1820–1 revolutionary risings. He took part in the 1848 revolt, was arrested and exiled. In 1860 he became interior minister when Francesco II was forced to grant a constitution. When the king escaped, he facilitated Garibaldi's arrival in Naples and the annexation to Piedmont. |
